Veronica Burton is an accomplished American professional basketball player, currently competing for the Golden State Valkyries in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). She previously distinguished herself as a collegiate athlete at Northwestern University, where she demonstrated exceptional talent and leadership on the court. In the 2022 WNBA Draft, Veronica Burton was selected as the 7th overall pick by the Dallas Wings. Additionally, she has represented the United States on the international stage, securing a gold medal at the 2021 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup.
Born on July 12, 2000, in Newton, Massachusetts, Veronica Burton began playing basketball at a young age and quickly garnered recognition for her remarkable abilities. During her freshman year (2018–19) at Northwestern, she started all 31 games, leading the Big Ten Conference in steals (81), ranking second in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.4), and tying for sixteenth in assists per game (3.6). In her sophomore season (2019–20), she continued her strong performance, again topping the Big Ten in steals (100), ranking second in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.4), fourth in assists (152), and maintaining an impressive free throw percentage (.793). Her achievements earned her honors including a place on the Big Ten All-Defensive Team and recognition as the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year.
In the 2020–21 season, her junior year, Veronica Burton started 24 of 25 games for Northwestern, leading her team in points per game (16.2), assists (4.9), and steals (3.8). Notably, her average of 3.84 steals per game also led the entire NCAA.
On October 21, 2021, Veronica Burton was appointed team captain for the 2021–22 season. Throughout her senior year, she maintained impressive averages of 18 points, six assists, five rebounds, and four steals per game. Heading into the NCAA Tournament, she led the nation in total steals and ranked second nationally in steals per game.
On March 25, 2022, Veronica Burton chose to forgo her extra year of eligibility, which was granted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and officially declared for the 2022 WNBA Draft. At the conclusion of her collegiate career, she ranked second all-time in her program’s history with 394 steals and third all-time in the history of the Big Ten Conference. Additionally, she finished third in program history with 575 career assists.
On April 11, 2022, Veronica Burton was selected seventh overall in the first round of the 2022 WNBA Draft by the Dallas Wings. On May 12, 2024, she was waived by the Wings. Over two seasons, she played in 76 regular-season games, making 19 starts and averaging 2.5 points and 2.1 assists per game.
On June 5, 2024, Veronica Burton signed a rest-of-season contract with the Connecticut Sun for the 2024 WNBA season.
On December 6, 2024, Veronica Burton was chosen by the Golden State Valkyries from the Connecticut Sun’s 2024 roster during the WNBA expansion draft. She became one of the key players for the team.
She signed with the Bendigo Spirit for the 2024–25 WNBL season during the off-WNBA season and became a champion.
